The West Highland Way Race 2025

Before you read on or scroll, I won't be adding many (or any) pictures to this blog as I want to write this down with so many thoughts running through my mind. If you wish to see the pictures and videos you can check them out under my WHW 2025 highlight on my Instagram profile @niknakultraruns. On the lead up to this race, Stevie had asked me before the ballot had been drawn, if he was to be chosen to run the race, would I be able to crew for him? He barely got to the end of the sentence before I agreed and agreed to do the entire weekend. Having been at the start line last year, I had massive FOMO at the thought of having to go home and watch the race from afar. Back in 2024 I had decided that I wanted a front row seat for 2025. I was more than delighted when Stevie had asked me to crew him. People had suggested last year on my completion of the Devil to put my name into the ballot. However, had I been chosen, I knew myself that mentally and physically I would not have been prepar...

Fling Training Week 6

This week saw a slight change in the long run & managing to fit it in. Here's the round up of the week: Monday - S&C upper body. Started later on in the evening due to life. I keep telling myself every week 'I should do this in the morning!'. I really should. Then it would be done! Right before bed it was a yoga session for tight neck & shoulders. After reflecting last week on the lack of it, I want to implement it more. Not only good for physical stretching but it calms my mind too. Tuesday - Intervals. Same loop for consistency & a measure of progress. Tonight the plan was 10 minutes warm up & cool down, 2 x 1km effort with 2 minutes recovery followed by 4 x 500m effort with 60 seconds recovery. I managed to obtain my 1km and half mile PB! It was tough & a real confidence booster. Even if I did have my Alphafly's on! Progress is progress! Tuesday was finished with a relaxation stretch. It felt good. Wednesday - S&C lower body. I really di...

Fling Training Week 5

This week concludes the end of the month as well as week 5 of the block. It feels like quite a milestone as Strava and Garmin like to conclude the monthly challenges and statistics. The roundup of the month will be discussed at the end of this post. Here's how the week has panned out: Monday:  Bank holiday so a break to the usual routine. Not a bad thing as I managed to get my upper S&C session in early, but not 5am early! The positive from this workout was I'm slowly progressing onto heavier weights & feeling more confident. Tuesday: Intervals. I looked forward to this as it was 6 x 600m with a 90s rest in between. 10 minute warm up and cool down. I started later than desired because of life but there wasn't anything stopping me from getting these done. It was a good session & am feeling more mentally prepared as to how tough these will be as I'm pushing myself. I'm using the same loop now for a measurement of progress and it has a slight incline on i...

Fling training weeks 3 & 4

Week 3's post was overshadowed by the Wildheart x Rocket events post last week so I'll be combining the 2 weeks into this post. For more detail on the long run from week 3, see the post from last week! Now I have to have a think what happened at the start of week 3 as it feels like a while ago! Monday - S & C followed by a short walk. I must have wanted to get the step count up & walked the day off.  Tuesday - I've not forgot this one, intervals. 10 minute warm up & cool down with 1 x 1km, 90 second rest followed by 5 x 500m with 60 second rest. On paper it didn't sound as tough as the week before with 2 1km bursts. Well, I was humbled! I put on the vaporfly's for the fun factor again and managed 1s away from my km PB (which almost made me sick) and a half mile PB! I took it easier on the 1st 500m burst but the others that followed were decent. It was a good session and dare I say it? I almost now look forward to intervals. Also managed a yoga relaxati...
